This morning we left Havana and headed east.

Along the Autopista

The autopista is a divided highway built in the early 1980s that stretches across the western end of the island. These pictures were snapped from the bus. Learn more about Cuba's road system here.

Los Caneyes

We stopped for a buffet lunch at a lovely hotel near Santa Clara called Los Caneyes. The theme of the hotel recreates a village of aboriginal Taino people.

For her constant aid to the poor, her donations to the city and the independence war, Marta Abreu de Estevez (1845-1909) won the title of the great benefactor. She traveled to Europe and the United States, which allowed her to appreciate the differences between the developed countries and her own. She is recognized in Cuba as the leader in Social Services.

Sancti Spiritus

Sancti Spiritus, the capital city of the province of Sancti Spiritus, is one of the oldest Cuban European settlements. It is celebrating its 500th anniversary in 2014. It is being considered for World Heritage status by UNESCO. A program of beautification has made this city a jewel of color and art.

This statue of José Marti (1853-1895) is one of hundreds that we saw throughout the country. He became a symbol for Cuba's  bid for independence against Spain the the 19th century as he dedicated his life to the promotion of liberty and political independence for Cuba and intellectual independence for all Spanish Americans.
